Release date: 2016-09-14

Update: translation to “Ash Crow” here

This song was used in the TV adaptation of Berserk. Again… The great Shishou never lets us down!

Under maddening moon, with the wailing of people
Inside the delusional wildfire, a “God” is born
Ashes, ashes, our hearts have been bound for a thousand years
Ah, the word “Protection” is even
Copied onto our ignorant, ignorant shackles
Burns and dances, carried away by the majestic wind
The dirt of karma never settles down on ground
Ashes, ashes, if you enlighten and become the fire that burns for a hundred nights
Ah, then let that eternal, eternal sound
Echo in the heart forever
Ashes dance! Ashes dance! Ashes dance! Ah
Ashes dance! Ashes dance! Ashes dance! Ah
Ashes, dance!
Ah, keeping your origin unique is difficult
Ashes, tell me your name!
Ah, understanding that endless power is difficult
Ashes dance! Ashes dance!
Inside the howling of wind that surrounds the intimidating tower
And inside the terrifying nightmare, a “God” is born
Ashes, ashes, attack the evil that persisted for a thousand years
Ah, declare admonition, admonition
As meaningless nonsense
Ashes dance! Ashes dance! Ashes dance! Ah
Ashes dance! Ashes dance! Ashes dance! Ah
Ashes, dance!
Ah, keeping your origin unique is difficult
Ashes, tell me your name!
Ah, understanding that endless light is difficult

  1. Impressive works here. I read both English and Chinese at some extent, could catch a glimpse of your profound understanding of the original lyrics.

One thing I want to suggest is that ‘scatter’ could be more faithful–closer to the original text–translation for 舞え (and 飞扬 instead of 起舞 in Chinese translation?). Before the release, Hirasawa explained how his idea for Ashes was developed (http://kyrynyu.tumblr.com/post/146352794685/berserk-special-program-broadcasted-in-late-night) on WOWOW TV channel; implying ashes symbolize the people being oppressed by whom described as ‘God’, yet ashes may defeat so-called God or the Evil as they scatter. Besides, ‘dance’ sounds as if the original lyric was 灰踊れ, IMHO. Just my .02..Will introduce your blog to the fellow fans. Again, thanks for the great work!

    1. Thank you for your compliment!
As for your suggestion, I do agree with using 飞扬 over 起舞,since 飞扬 also has the meaning of being high-spirited (as in 神采飞扬) besides dancing in the air (as in 尘土飞扬). Not sure about scatter though – for me ‘scatter’ feels quite passive, as if the ‘ashes’ are blown up by the wind, floating aimlessly and not concentrating their power to defeat the God. Whereas ‘dance’ could imply a more active and synchronised action.
I haven’t thought about the difference between 舞う and 踊る before seeing your comment. Googling didn’t give me a clear answer – some say that 舞う is for slow and ancient dances where 踊る is more general, others say they are the same.TBH I think Hirasawa may have used 舞え just because it sounds better.
